Flag Retirement Ceremony

On June 14, 2018, Kassie Junghanns, OSU Extension Ag/4-H Educator and the Grant County Sr. 4-H members, hosted a flag ceremony to retire worn American flags. The ceremony was held at the Grant County Expo Center at the county fairgrounds in Pond Creek.

Those Sr. members assisting in the ceremony were Sarah Taylor, Paige Duffield, Abby Cardwell, Haley Voelzke, Emma Taylor, and James Krejsek.  Doug Conrady, Oklahoma Director for Bugles Across America, played TAPS as the flags burned in retirement. Two of Grant County’s Veterans attended the ceremony. World War II Veteran and POW, R.D. Lawrence and Korean War Veteran, Lyle Montgomery.

During the ceremony, over 180 worn American flags from across Grant County were retired that day. There is a respectful way to go about retiring the American flag.

Detailed instructions are given. Anyone who has a worn flag is welcome to bring it to the Grant County Courthouse. First Floor (Medford), District 1 Shop (2005 Elm St., Wakita), District 2 Shop (524 N Front St., Medford), or District 3 Shop (416 W Dogwood, Pond Creek) . There is an official disposal retirement box located at each of these locations and they are provided in cooperation with the Grant County Commissioners, the National Association of Counties (NACo), and the National Flag Foundation.
